This past year, the Men’s team competed in the USACFC club championships in Knoxville, Tennessee. Beginning with team seeding and individuals on the first day, Cornell started out strong by seeding Epee, Foil, and Saber into 1st, 2nd, and 2nd respectively. After qualifying six fencers for the individual tournament, junior foil fencer Owen Sconzo brought home the first medal for the team with the individual gold.
Leading into the second day, junior epee fencer Zoltán Mihaly entered the individual tournament seeded in 1st place, a position he would maintain by winning individual gold. Cornell started strong in the team event in all three weapons, showing easy victories into the 16 and 8. Epee won a close meet against Georgia Tech with Sophomore Epee fencer Kevin Wang anchoring the final bout to win 5-4. Epee continued its drive to defeat the University of Michigan in the semifinals 5-2, but ultimately fell short in the final 4-5 to Dartmouth College. Foil showed a strong performance throughout the bracket with many strong performances by each fencer, but ultimately were defeated in a well fought bout 4-5 to the University of Chicago. Saber rushed into the team event, not dropping a single bout in the first three meets. Although being defeated by the University of Texas Austin in the semifinal, the squad pulled through in the bronze medal match 5-2 against Northwestern.
With stellar performances across all weapons, the team grasped the Overall Men’s Team Combined Championship, the first time for the team in fourteen years, and the second time for the team since the championships founding.
Thank you for the continued support by parents, friends, and alumni. Your generous support helped make this historic victory possible. We hope to see you all at our annual alumni meet and banquet tomorrow. Go Big Red!
